Paul Thomas Anderson Poised for Historic Oscar Sweep with ‘One Battle After Another’
Paul Thomas Anderson is the front-runner to achieve a rare Oscars triple win – Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay – for his 2025 film, One Battle After Another. If successful, he would become the tenth filmmaker in Academy Awards history to accomplish this feat.
A Story of Redemption and Pursuit
One Battle After Another, inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland, centers on Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a former revolutionary forced back into a combative lifestyle when he and his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti), are pursued by a corrupt military officer portrayed by Sean Penn.
The Exclusive Club of Triple Winners
Anderson is aiming to join an elite group of filmmakers who have won Oscars for producing, directing, and writing the same film. The previous nine are:
- Billy Wilder — The Apartment (1960)
- Francis Ford Coppola — The Godfather Part II (1974)
- James L. Brooks — Terms of Endearment (1983)
- Peter Jackson — The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
- Alejandro González Iñárritu — Birdman (2014)
- Bong Joon Ho — Parasite (2019)
- Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
- Sean Baker — Anora (2024)
Historically, this achievement was uncommon, particularly during the classic studio era. Although, it has become slightly more frequent since 2000.
Recent Accolades Fuel Oscar Hopes
Anderson’s momentum heading into the Oscars is strong. He has already secured wins at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and BAFTA Awards for all three categories – Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. He also received accolades from the Producers Guild and Directors Guild. The Writers Guild will announce its winners on March 8, 2026.
A Long-Awaited Win?
Despite 11 prior Oscar nominations for producing, directing, and/or writing – including nods for Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), There Will Be Blood (2007), Inherent Vice (2014), Phantom Thread (2017), and Licorice Pizza (2021) – Anderson has yet to win an Academy Award. One Battle After Another marks his seventh film to receive at least one Oscar nomination, and it appears to be his strongest contender yet.
If Anderson wins in all three categories, he will enter the Dolby Theatre with 14 nominations and depart with three wins.
