Wolves Boss O’Neil Vows to Turn Around “Difficult” Season After West Ham Defeat
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil spoke following his side’s 2-1 loss at West Ham United, expressing his commitment to turning the club’s season around despite their continued struggles in the relegation zone.
Despite Matt Doherty’s goal cancelling out Tomas Soucek’s opener, Jarrod Bowen struck late to snatch victory for West Ham, leaving Wolves searching for their first win in six Premier League matches.
Taking Responsibility
“People above me are supportive, but the supporters want their club to be successful. I understand it’s my team and I have to take responsibility,” O’Neil told Sky Sports.
Financial Constraints
O’Neil emphasized the significant challenges faced by the club, highlighting the substantial player sales the club has made since his arrival.
“We’ve sold an awful lot of Premier League players – if we go back to Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore, Diego Costa, Raul Jimenez, Max Kilman, Pedro Neto. We are not shopping in that market anymore. We are trying to find young ones,” he explained.
Continued Belief and Optimism
Despite the hardships, O’Neil remains confident in his squad’s potential.
“I am really proud of them. But I can only ask them to give what they give and they are giving everything. They hate the position we are in. And I am right there with them. We won’t give up and we will keep working,” he stated.
Looking Forward
With a crucial match against fellow strugglers Ipswich Town on the horizon, O’Neil is optimistic about a positive response from his team.
“I am really disappointed because it was a decent away performance,” he continued. “We deserved some points. I watched Leicester City beat West Ham a few days ago and Leicester were absolutely getting pummelled with 30 shots. This game was nothing like that, but Leicester manage to win that game and we come out with nothing.
“There are a lot of things that need to be done. They are a great group. They understand the situation at the club and that it’s difficult. But they are standing up and fighting.”
Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling “six-pointer” clash between Wolves and Ipswich Town.
