Islamabad, Pakistan – In a recent proclamation, the Pakistani government has maintained the current prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) for the next fortnight, beginning January 16th. however, a notable increase in the petroleum levy has been implemented on both fuel types.

According to an official press release from the Petroleum Division, petrol prices will remain fixed at Rs253.17 per litre, while HSD will continue to be sold at Rs257.08 per litre.

The adjustment comes in the form of an increased petroleum levy. Petrol will now be subject to a levy of Rs4.65, while diesel will see an increase of Rs0.80. This brings the total combined petroleum and carbon levies to Rs87 per litre for petrol and Rs79 per litre for diesel.

The stability in petrol prices offers limited relief to consumers who rely on private transport, including car owners, motorcycle riders, and users of rickshaws. These segments of the population, largely comprising the middle and lower-middle classes, are directly impacted by fluctuations in petrol costs.

High-speed diesel,a crucial fuel for the transportation sector, including heavy vehicles, trains, and agricultural machinery,is expected to have broader inflationary consequences. Increases in HSD prices typically translate to higher transportation costs, ultimately impacting the prices of essential goods, particularly vegetables and other food items.
