Czech Railways Achieves 200 km/h Speed Record with Pendolino Trains

Czech Railways (ČD) has reached a significant milestone in modernizing its rail network, successfully operating Pendolino trains at speeds of up to 200 km/h on the Prague–České Budějovice line. This achievement marks the first time a passenger train in Czechia has exceeded the long-standing 160 km/h speed limit.

Breaking the Speed Barrier

The record-breaking run took place on August 31, 2025, with the Pendolino tilting train reaching 200 km/h. This advancement follows infrastructure upgrades and the acquisition of trains capable of higher speeds, paving the way for faster rail travel across the country. Currently, only two sections of the Prague-České Budějovice line – Votice to Sudoměřice u Tábora and Soběslav to Doubí – are approved for 200 km/h operation, with the remainder of the route operating at lower speeds.

Reduced Travel Times

The increased speed limit reduces the journey time between Prague and České Budějovice by 18 minutes. Passengers can now complete the trip in 95 minutes, with the return journey taking 95 minutes as well.

New Train Technology

Czech Railways’ newest investment includes ComfortJet trainsets paired with Siemens Vectron locomotives, designed for speeds of up to 230 km/h. The company has already begun operating the ComfortJet fleet on international routes, with further sets entering service in 2025–26.

Future High-Speed Rail Plans

Transport Minister Martin Kupka stated that this is a significant step towards higher speeds on future high-speed lines, where Czech trains could potentially reach speeds of up to 320 km/h.

Polish Pendolino Testing

Prior to the regular service launch, a Polish Pendolino train underwent testing on Czech tracks, traveling a total of sixty thousand kilometers. Passengers encountered Czech train staff onboard, although restaurant services were provided by the Polish company WARS.

Statements from Leadership

Michal Krapinec, Chairman of the Board of Czech Railways, hailed the achievement as an important step forward in introducing speedy rail travel around the country. He also noted the success of the Pendolino trains in Poland, stating, “During the eleven years that the Pendolina has been in operation in Poland, it has traveled millions of kilometers and we are happy that more will be added on the trains of the Czech Railways.”

Krapinec also highlighted the capabilities of the new trains, stating, “Our modern ComfortJet trains, paired with high-speed Vectron locomotives, can travel at speeds up to 230 km/h, and we plan to continue improving travel times.”
