We Energies Assures Port Washington Residents: AI Data Center Won’t Raise Energy Bills
As Port Washington prepares to become a significant hub for artificial intelligence and cloud computing, concerns about the potential impact on local energy bills have arisen. However, We Energies, the primary energy provider for the region, has assured residents that the new Lighthouse data center campus will not lead to increased rates.
Customer Protection Plan in Place
According to We Energies President Mike Hooper, a customer protection plan has been proposed to state regulators to ensure that energy rates in Port Washington remain stable despite the increased demand from the data center development. The core principle of this plan is that data centers will cover their own costs – both the energy they consume and the expenses associated with building new power generation and equipment to serve them. [1]
Fair and Transparent Approach
Hooper emphasized the fairness and transparency of the proposal, highlighting that it includes binding agreements to ensure data center owners, and not other customers, bear the financial responsibility for the necessary infrastructure upgrades. This plan is currently under review by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, with opportunities for customer feedback and input. [1]
Investment in Renewable Energy
To support the Lighthouse campus, We Energies is investing in both new renewable energy sources and modern natural gas facilities. This investment aims to meet the increased energy demand while maintaining energy security for the region. The addition of this capacity is not expected to translate into higher local energy bills for residents. [1]
Strengthening Wisconsin’s Power Grid
The new facilities will not only provide clean energy through renewable sources but also ensure a reliable power supply with natural gas plants available during peak demand. These additions are projected to strengthen Wisconsin’s power grid by adding thousands of megawatts of locally produced electricity. [1]
Current Bill Increases Due to Weather and Market Costs
We Energies notes that recent increases in customer energy bills are primarily attributable to the extreme cold weather experienced in December and January, as well as higher energy supply costs determined by market forces. The company utilizes natural gas storage facilities to mitigate price spikes and keep bills as low as possible. [1]
Lighthouse Data Center Details
The Vantage Data Centers Lighthouse campus, located just 30 minutes from Milwaukee, is a 672-acre project slated to include four data centers with a total of 902MW of critical IT load across 2.5 million square feet. [1] The $15 billion project is being developed in partnership with OpenAI and Oracle. [3] Construction began in December 2025, with the Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., The Weitz Co., a joint venture between Turner Construction and McCarthy Building Companies, and Michels serving as the construction team. Customer Support and Assistance
We Energies encourages customers with concerns about their energy bills to contact the company for assistance with energy assistance programs, payment options, and energy efficiency tools. [1]
We Energies is committed to ensuring that the development of the Lighthouse data center campus does not result in higher energy bills for Port Washington residents. The company’s customer protection plan, coupled with investments in renewable energy and grid strengthening, aims to provide a reliable and affordable energy supply for the community.
