Ryanair to go fully digital: Boarding passes to disappear by 2025
Ryanair, Europe’s largest low-cost carrier, is set to leave behind printed boarding passes entirely, embracing a fully digital system by summer 2025. The move, part of the airline’s ongoing streamlining efforts, will eliminate printed passes and coincides with a plan to scrap the standard check-in fee.
“We’re seeing 80% of our passengers already managing their bookings and accessing digital boarding passes through the Ryanair app,” stated Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary. “Moving everyone to the app will not only streamline our operations but also save passengers money by eliminating the check-in fee altogether.”
The Ryanair app will become the sole means of accessing boarding passes. Passengers will be able to check in and download their pass digitally after they’ve completed the check-in process. Exemptions will only apply to travelers departing from Moroccan airports, where regulations may necessitate a physical copy of the boarding pass.
However, the transition isn’t without its potential hurdles. While Ryanair maintains that the 20% of passengers who currently rely on printed passes represent a small fraction, travel expert Eoghan Corry warns of potential disruptions upon implementation. “There will be absolute havoc when that takes effect,” asserted Corry. “Ryanair is gambling that these passengers will adapt quickly.”
For those who lack access to a printer, Ryanair will offer a printing service at the check-in desk. However, this convenience will come at a cost: a €20 fee per passenger, plus additional airport check-in fees ranging from €30 to €55, depending on the departure location.
Ryanair remains committed to facilitating a smoother journey for passengers through digital innovation. O’Leary stressed the long-term benefits: “This move towards a fully digital system will create a faster, more efficient, and ultimately more cost-effective travel experience for everyone.”
Passengers are urged to download the Ryanair app and familiarize themselves with its features in advance. Ensuring a fully charged mobile device at the airport will be crucial for a seamless experience. For those who prefer printed passes, planning ahead and being aware of the potential fees associated with last-minute printing at the check-in desk is highly recommended.
