Prabowo Defends Free Nutritious Meals Program, Cites Economic Benefits and Human Development
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed his commitment to the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, emphasizing its importance for improving the quality of Indonesia’s human resources and stimulating economic growth. The program has faced scrutiny regarding implementation and budgetary concerns, but President Prabowo remains steadfast in his support.
“I will survive as much as possible. Rather than having money corrupted, it would be better for my people to be able to eat,” President Prabowo stated during a discussion with journalists and experts, as reported by the Indonesian Communications Agency (Bakom) on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
Addressing Stunting and Campaign Promises
The President highlighted that the MBG program is a direct response to the needs observed during his campaign. He recalled witnessing cases of severe stunting firsthand, describing children aged 11 with the physical development of four-year-olds. “You don’t see those kids stunting? I see. I campaigned several times, I was in the villages, I saw it. I, I’m sure, I’m on the right path. We have the money,” Prabowo said.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
President Prabowo outlined the program’s potential to generate significant economic activity. He estimated that at its peak, the MBG program will involve 31,000 kitchens, potentially creating 1.5 million jobs. Each kitchen is expected to employ 50 people.
each Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG), or MBG kitchen, is anticipated to support 5-10 local food ingredient suppliers, creating an additional 1.5 million employment opportunities for farmers and vendors selling essential commodities like eggs, carrots, and vegetables.
Addressing Criticisms and Ensuring Accountability
Acknowledging criticisms and implementation challenges, President Prabowo stated that the government has taken decisive action to address shortcomings. “There are a thousand, more than a thousand (kitchens) that we have closed,” he said, indicating a commitment to ensuring program integrity.
Funding and Budget Efficiency
President Prabowo emphasized that the MBG program will be funded through increased efficiency and reduced leaks within the existing state budget, rather than through new debt. “We have the money. We just need to organize, we will reduce leaks,” he stated.
Focus on Inclusive Economic Growth
The President concluded by reiterating that the MBG program is part of a broader effort to ensure that the benefits of economic growth are shared more equitably, particularly among lower-income groups who have historically been excluded. “Most of our people have not enjoyed the goodness of our economy for too long,” Prabowo said.
