Prince William Highlights ‘National Catastrophe’ of Male Suicide and Opens Up About Emotional Wellbeing
Prince William has underscored the critical need to address male suicide rates in the UK, calling the situation a “national catastrophe.” In a recent appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Life Hacks, the Prince of Wales also shared his personal journey in understanding and processing emotions, advocating for increased openness about mental health, particularly among men.
The Scale of the Problem
According to the Office for National Statistics, suicide was the leading cause of death among young people aged 20 to 34 in England and Wales in 2024. This statistic underscores the urgency of the issue, prompting Prince William to emphasize the importance of preventative measures and open conversations.
Promoting Male Role Models and Open Dialogue
Prince William stressed the importance of having more male role models who are willing to publicly discuss their mental health struggles. He believes that increased visibility of men sharing their experiences will encourage others to do the same, normalizing conversations around mental wellbeing and making it “second nature to us all.”
Personal Reflections on Emotional Wellbeing
The Prince of Wales reflected on his own experiences, stating, “I take a long time trying to understand my emotions and why I feel like I do and I feel like that’s a really important process to do every now and again, to check in with yourself and work out why you’re feeling like you do.” He acknowledged that understanding one’s emotions isn’t always straightforward, but emphasized the value of self-reflection. He also noted that mental health crises are often temporary, stating, “you can have a strong mental health crisis moment but it will pass.”
The Royal Foundation’s Commitment
Prince William’s commitment to mental health extends beyond advocacy. His Royal Foundation is contributing £1 million to the development of a National Suicide Prevention Network, demonstrating a tangible investment in addressing this critical issue.
The Importance of Self-Love and Support
Prince William encouraged listeners to “learn to love yourself and understand yourself,” highlighting the foundational role of self-compassion in mental wellbeing. He also emphasized the value of seeking support from mental health charities, describing them as “that little stepping stone” to navigate difficult times.
Professor Green’s Perspective
The panel discussion also featured rapper Professor Green (Stephen Manderson), a long-time advocate for mental health awareness. He emphasized the importance of creating supportive networks and accessible services, particularly for young people. Professor Green praised Prince William’s openness, noting that it could encourage others to address the issue and break down stigmas.
