Recent collaborative efforts between the Pawtucket and Providence Police Departments have resulted in the arrest of two individuals facing significant drug-related charges. The month-long examination, conducted by the Special Squad Narcotics Detectives, uncovered evidence leading to the apprehension of a current Providence police Officer and an associate.

Details of the Arrests

Jaylan Lopez, 24, of Pawtucket, and Destiny Viera, 25, of Providence, are both facing multiple felony charges related to drug manufacturing and distribution. Lopez is charged with manufacturing/delivering/possession with intent to manufacture/deliver a controlled substance, drug conspiracy, distribution or manufacturing in or near schools, maintaining a common nuisance, and felony conspiracy. Viera faces charges including manufacturing/delivering/possession with intent to manufacture/deliver a controlled substance, drug conspiracy, distribution or manufacturing in or near schools, and maintaining a common nuisance. Officer Terminated Following Allegations

Viera was a probationary officer with the Providence Police department,having commenced employment in September 2024. Following her arrest, city officials swiftly moved to terminate her employment. Samara Pinto,Deputy Press Secretary for Providence,confirmed that Viera “was newly hired and on probation and will no longer be employed by the City of Providence.”

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez emphasized the department’s commitment to upholding high standards, stating that the severity of the allegations warranted immediate dismissal. “She was arrested and…this individual will not be retained by the police department,” Perez explained.
