Quakertown High School Protest Escalates, Students Arrested After Clash with Police

Quakertown, PA – A student-led walkout protesting ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) tactics turned violent in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, on Friday, February 20, 2026, resulting in multiple arrests and allegations of excessive force by police. The incident, which unfolded both at Quakertown High School and in the downtown area, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability.

Walkout Canceled, Protest Moves to Town

Quakertown School District officials initially canceled a planned student walkout at the high school. However, a group of students proceeded with their protest in downtown Quakertown, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement. Videos circulating on social media depict arrests, including those of teenagers, taking place on Front Street.

Allegations of Police Misconduct

Eyewitness accounts and video footage raise serious concerns about the conduct of Quakertown Police Chief Scott McElree. Videos show McElree, who was not in uniform, engaging in physical confrontations with students, including placing a female student in a chokehold. Another video appears to show a uniformed officer forcefully throwing a student into a planter after the student attempted to intervene.

Police Response and Arrests

The Quakertown Police Department confirmed the arrest of five to six juveniles and one adult following the protest. In a statement, police claimed officers intervened due to “disruptive and unsafe behaviors” and to maintain public safety. The police investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses who spoke to ABC 6 described a situation where police escalated the conflict. “I am shaken by it, they were children,” one witness stated. “They were children being ganged up on by adults with no self-control.” Another witness said, “The man started to attack the students, and that’s when the other students intervened and tried to obtain him to stop.”

Nationwide Trend of Student Protests and Repression

The incident in Quakertown is part of a broader trend of student protests against ICE and increased police response. Similar walkouts have occurred in other states, including Virginia and Texas, where students have faced suspensions and threats of disciplinary action. In Virginia, 303 students at Woodbridge High School were informed they would be suspended for participating in a walkout. In San Antonio, roughly 30 students were suspended for a February 13 walkout, and seniors were allegedly threatened with being barred from prom and graduation.

Ongoing Concerns

The events in Quakertown have raised questions about the appropriate response to student protests and the utilize of force by law enforcement. The police have not yet released body camera or dash camera footage to substantiate their claims regarding the events leading to the arrests.
