South African Agriculture Poised for Strong Start with Early Summer Rains

Early summer rains have begun to fall across several regions of South Africa, signaling a promising start to the 2025/2026 agricultural season. These favorable conditions are expected to support robust crop production and ensure planting occurs on schedule.

Farmers are demonstrating cautious optimism, currently planning to plant 4.5 million hectares of summer grains and oilseeds – a slight increase of 1% compared to the 4.46 million hectares planted in the 2024/25 season. Beyond grain and oilseed production, the rainfall is also significantly benefiting livestock farmers through improved grazing veld, and is expected to positively impact the horticulture industry.
