Rare Pokémon Card Soars to $54,000 at Auction
A first edition Shadowless Base Set Charizard Pokémon card, purchased for $2.70 in 1999, is set to be auctioned for an estimated $54,000 by Hansons Auctioneers [1]. The card is considered a “holy grail” among collectors.
The “Holy Grail” of Pokémon Cards
The 1st edition Shadowless Base Set Charizard is highly sought after due to its rarity. Between 4,000 and 10,000 of these cards were initially produced [1], [2] and most were heavily played with, resulting in few surviving in mint condition. The card being auctioned is graded a 9 out of 10, further increasing its value [1].
Auction Details and Pokémon’s Enduring Appeal
The auction, hosted by Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbyshire, will take place on Friday, February 27th, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the launch of Pokémon cards in 1996 [3], [2]. David Wilson-Turner, a Pokémon specialist at Hansons, noted that Pokémon Day is expected to reignite interest in the franchise [1].
Since its debut in 1996, the Pokémon franchise has captivated audiences worldwide, evolving into a multimedia phenomenon encompassing films, television shows, and online gaming [1].
Other Rare Pokémon Items Up for Auction
In addition to the Charizard card, a complete set of first-edition Jungle cards, all graded 9, is also being auctioned with a guide price of between $20,300 and $27,000 [2]. This set was originally released in June 1999 for $270. A sealed booster box from the first Pokémon collection in English, containing 36 sealed packs, is estimated to be worth between $16,900 and $20,300 [2]. The box originally cost around $135.
Rising Prices Driven by Nostalgia
Auctioneer Charles Hanson attributes the surge in prices to young adults in their 20s and 30s, who collected Pokémon cards as children, now entering the market with significant purchasing power [2], [3]. Prices began to increase a few years ago, fueled by nostalgia and a growing collector base.
