Rodent Infestations in Vehicles on the Rise Across Ireland: A Growing Concern for Motorists
Irish motorists are facing a growing threat from rodent infestations in their vehicles, with a recent surge in reported cases. Pest control experts are warning that rats and mice are increasingly seeking shelter in cars, vans, and trucks, particularly during colder months, leading to potentially costly damage and safety risks.
Rentokil Reports Significant Increase in Vehicle Infestations
According to an internal survey conducted by Rentokil, Ireland’s leading pest control provider, 84% of their pest control technicians have encountered rats inside vehicles, while 57% have found mice. A significant 57% of technicians reported dealing with rodent infestations in vehicles within the past month alone.1
Cars are the most commonly affected vehicle type, followed by vans and trucks. The attraction stems from the warmth, shelter, and protection vehicles offer, especially during colder, wetter weather. Engine bays and hidden compartments provide ideal nesting spots.
The Damage Rodents Can Cause
Once inside a vehicle, rodents can cause substantial damage by gnawing through wiring, insulation, seatbelts, and pipework. This can lead to vehicle breakdowns, expensive repairs, and, in some cases, even a fire risk.2
Why are Rodent Infestations Increasing?
Colm Moore, Regional Technical Manager for Rentokil, explains that the increasing frequency of vehicle infestations is linked to colder weather. “We’re seeing more and more cases of rats infesting vehicles, and with colder weather, the risk increases significantly,” he stated.1
Moore also notes that rats are agile and can enter vehicles through surprisingly small gaps, such as grilles, vents, or even open windows. Rodents exhibit neophobic tendencies – a wariness of new objects – meaning vehicles parked in the same location for extended periods can become more appealing as they perceive like a stable environment.1
Signs of a Rodent Infestation in Your Vehicle
Motorists should be vigilant for the following signs of a rodent infestation:
- An unusual ammonia-like smell
- Scratching sounds in walls or under the bonnet
- Evidence of nesting materials
- Gnaw marks on wires or other components
Preventative Measures: Seven Tips from Rentokil
Rentokil recommends the following steps to prevent rodents from entering vehicles and causing damage:
- Regularly check your vehicle, including under the bonnet, for droppings, gnaw marks, or unusual smells, especially during colder months.
- Remove all food and rubbish from inside the vehicle.
- Park in regularly used areas and avoid parking near bins, compost heaps, or overgrown vegetation.
- If possible, avoid leaving your vehicle stationary for long periods. Move it occasionally to disrupt nesting attempts.
- Ensure all windows are fully closed when parked.
- Regularly remove child seats and vacuum thoroughly underneath.
- Keep garages and carports clutter-free to reduce hiding places.
Broader Pest Control Measures
Rentokil also advises homeowners and businesses to maintain decent external hygiene practices, such as securing bins and sealing gaps around properties, to minimize the risk of attracting rats.2 The company’s Flexi Armour proofing range offers a durable rodent-proofing system to block entry points and provide added protection.
National Increase in Rodent Activity
The issue extends beyond vehicle infestations. Rentokil has reported a 12% increase in overall rat activity in 2025 compared to 2024.3 Nationally, there was a 45% increase in rat activity and a 39% rise in mouse activity, indicating a “widespread issue across Ireland.”2
