Ravens Waive Wide Receiver Diontae Johnson

The Baltimore Ravens have parted ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson, officially waiving him on Friday. This move brings a swift end to Johnson’s short tenure with the team, which began in a trade with the Carolina Panthers just a few months ago.

A Turbulent Time in Baltimore

Acquired in late October, Johnson’s time with the Ravens was marked by limited playing time and ultimately, controversy. He saw action in only four games, racking up a mere 39 snaps and registering a single catch for 6 yards. In his final appearance, Johnson refused to participate in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, leading to a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Following this incident, both sides agreed to terminate his participation in team activities.

Looking Ahead

While the Ravens could have held onto Johnson to secure a compensatory draft pick upon his eventual departure in free agency, they opted for a clean break. Johnson will now be subject to waivers until Monday afternoon. If he clears waivers, he will officially become a free agent, available to sign with any interested team.

Past Success

Before joining the Ravens, Johnson spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, establishing himself as a capable receiver. In his time with the Steelers, he amassed an impressive 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns. This past season alone, while playing for the Panthers, he caught 30 passes for 357 yards and 3 touchdowns across seven games.

Practice Squad Elevations

The Ravens also announced the elevation of cornerback Desmond King and wide receiver Anthony Miller from their practice squad for Saturday’s game.
