For the past few days, the eyes of the baseball world have been focused on Japanese sensation Kazuma Okamoto; whose negotiating window was set to close on Sunday. The Toronto Blue Jays, who were obviously tired of waiting, reportedly struck a deal with Okamoto on Saturday afternoon.
Though the Cincinnati Reds were not reported to be among the suitors for Okamoto, they stand to benefit from his signing. The addition of Okamoto only increases the chances that the Blue Jays will look to trade one of their bats this offseason, and given the success Toronto enjoyed last season, Cincinnati should be ready to pounce.
Okamoto is a third baseman by trade, but many scouts and experts believe he’ll eventually move to first base. The blue Jays roster is stacked with players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Addison Barger, Ernie Clement, and Andrés Giménez scattered across the infield dirt, not to mention George Springer, Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho, and Nathan Lukes on the outfield grass.

Reds Explore Trade with Blue Jays Following Okamoto Signing, Targeting Joey Loperfido
The Cincinnati Reds, having shifted their focus to the trade market after missing out on Kyle Schwarber in free agency, are eyeing potential acquisitions from the Toronto blue Jays following the signing of outfielder Yuji Okamoto. While Anthony Santander, a former All-Star, was initially considered a possibility, his disappointing 2025 season (.175/.271/.294 with a shoulder injury) and hefty contract ($92 million over five years) make a trade unlikely without significant financial contribution from the Blue jays. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/anthony-santander/
Rather, the Reds are focusing on outfielder Joey Loperfido as a more attainable target. Loperfido, 26, spent much of the 2025 season in the minor leagues but demonstrated remarkable offensive capabilities when given opportunities in the majors, posting a .333/.379/.500 slash line in 41 games. https://www.mlb.com/player/joey-loperfido-667461 Over five minor league seasons, he has accumulated 59 home runs and maintained a .277/.369/.474 batting line.
The Okamoto signing has provided the Reds with increased trade versatility, and the Blue Jays, perhaps looking to shed salary and retool their roster, present a favorable trade partner. The Reds are actively seeking to improve their roster and believe Loperfido could be a valuable addition.
