Priest Suspended in Rennes Diocese Following Sexual Assault Allegations

The Diocese of Rennes has announced the precautionary suspension of a priest, Father Rémy Denais, following allegations of sexual assault. The decision, made by Bishop Pierre d’Ornellas on March 12, 2026, prohibits Father Denais from exercising any public priestly ministry. A canonical investigation is currently underway, and the diocese is appealing to the public for testimonies related to the case.

Details of the Allegations

The recent allegations stem from a report made to the diocesan reception and listening unit in February 2026. A woman came forward with a claim of sexual assault that allegedly occurred in 2000, when she was an adult. According to a press release from the diocese, the assault took place “in a context of spiritual accompaniment also involving an occult practice.”

The victim reported the incident to diocesan authorities in 2000. The diocese acknowledges a failure in addressing the initial report, stating it “regrets that the fact reported […] did not give rise, at that time, to canonical and judicial consequences.” The plaintiff has recently filed a legal complaint.

Previous Allegations and Suspension

This is not the first time allegations have been made against Father Denais. In November 2018, another woman testified about a sexual assault that also occurred in 2000. Following that report, a canonical investigation led to a one-year suspension, requiring psychological monitoring and spiritual guidance. Restrictions were also placed on his ministry, including a ban on spiritual accompaniment and limiting his work to a single parish.

Call for Testimonies

The Diocese of Rennes is urging anyone with information related to these or similar incidents to come forward. Individuals who have been victims or witnesses, or who possess information that could aid in establishing the truth, are encouraged to contact:

  • The Gendarmerie (French National Police)
  • The Police
  • The diocesan reception and listening unit at 02 99 14 35 53 or via email: celluledecoute@diocese35.fr

The diocese assures “attentive listening” and guarantees “respect for confidentiality” procedures.

Diocese Commitment

The Diocese of Rennes reaffirms “its determination to fight against any form of violence or abuse.” Father Denais is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
