New Insights into Reproductive Mood Disorders Presented at ISGE 2026
Researchers are expanding understanding of the underlying causes of reproductive mood disorders, according to research presented at the 2026 Annual Congress of the International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology (ISGE).
Understanding Affective Disorders
Affective disorders, encompassing conditions like depression and anxiety, represent a significant global health burden. They are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and can reduce lifespan by more than a decade. In the United States alone, these disorders incur over 200 billion USD annually in direct and indirect costs.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that manifests during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Symptoms can include depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue. Currently, diagnostic tools for PMDD are limited.
Perimenopausal Depression
Perimenopausal depression is a mood disorder that occurs during the transition to menopause. While many women experiencing perimenopausal depression have a history of depression, it can also occur for the first time during this period. Treatment options range from antidepressants to cognitive behavioral therapy.
New Research on Hormone Manipulation
Researchers studied two groups of women: those diagnosed with PMDD and those with a history of perimenopausal depression. A reproductive- and age-matched asymptomatic group served as a control. Blood samples were collected from all participants, and lymphoblastoid cell lines (lab-grown immune cells) were developed. Hormone levels were manipulated both in vivo and in vitro, and researchers analyzed hormone measures, behavioral ratings, and gene expression.
Implications for Treatment
Traditionally, reproductive mood disorders have been viewed as stemming from hormonal imbalances, requiring treatment to restore hormonal equilibrium. The research presented at the ISGE 2026 Annual Congress suggests a more nuanced understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders, potentially leading to more targeted and effective treatments.
