Italy Braces for Late-Season Cyclone: Yellow Alerts Issued for Multiple Regions

Italy is experiencing a late-season cold snap as a cyclone moves across the country, bringing gale-force winds, thunderstorms, and a significant drop in temperatures. Civil Protection authorities have issued yellow alerts for several regions, urging residents to take precautions.

Cyclone’s Path and Impact

The cyclone, originating from Northern Europe, is currently sliding along the Central-Southern regions of Italy. A pocket of cold Arctic air is responsible for the sharp temperature decrease, estimated at 8-10°C below average. Whereas the arctic air is expected to move eastward starting Sunday, March 29th, the immediate impact includes strong winds and localized severe weather.

Regional Alerts and Weather Conditions

As of March 26, 2026, yellow alerts are in effect for the following regions due to thunderstorms: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Molise, Puglia, and Umbria.

The National Meteorological Vigilance Bulletin for March 26, 2026, details the following conditions:

  • Precipitation: Scattered showers, potentially with thunderstorms, are expected in Romagna, Marche, and eastern mountainous areas of Umbria. Isolated to scattered showers are also forecast for central Emilia-Romagna, northern and eastern Tuscany, western Sardinia, the remaining sectors of Umbria and the southern peninsula, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, and northern Sicily, with generally weak to moderate cumulative rainfall.
  • Snowfall: Above 400-600 meters in the Apennine areas of Romagna and central Italy, with weak to moderate snowfall, potentially becoming locally heavy at higher elevations in Marche and Abruzzo. Above 800-1000 meters in the mountains of Basilicata, Calabria, and Sardinia, with a possible lowering of the snow line in the evening and generally weak snowfall.
  • Winds: Gale-force or strong gale-force winds from the northwest are battering Sardinia. Strong to gale-force winds from the north are expected across the rest of central-northern Italy, and from the west in Sicily, Calabria, and other southern regions.
  • Seas: The Sea of Sardinia is very rough to stormy. The Channel of Sardinia, the Strait of Sicily, and the central-southern Tyrrhenian Sea are agitated to very agitated, extending to the southern Ionian Sea. The central-northern Adriatic Sea and the open sea of Liguria are very choppy to agitated, while the remaining basins are choppy.

Safety Recommendations

Civil Protection authorities advise citizens to take the following precautions:

  • Secure Outdoor Structures: Ensure gazebos, tents, scaffolding, and potted plants are securely fastened to prevent damage or injury.
  • Avoid Tree-Lined Areas: Do not stop or pass through parks and wooded areas, as drought conditions have weakened branches, increasing the risk of falling trees.
  • Driving Precautions: Motorcyclists and drivers of vehicles with high profiles (caravans, vans) should exercise extreme caution due to the risk of skidding from lateral gusts, especially on highways and bridges.
  • Coastal Areas: Stay away from piers, harbors, and exposed coastlines facing the northwest, where waves may be significant.

The Civil Protection recommends staying informed through constant updates, limiting unnecessary travel, and reporting any emergency situations. The Lazio region’s Civil Protection website provides specific updates on hydrological and hydraulic risks. Lazio Civil Protection
