San Luis Valley Musicians Rubén Domínguez and Rose Vialpando to Perform at Society Hall
Rubén Domínguez and Rose Vialpando will bring their deep-rooted musical traditions of the San Luis Valley to the Society Hall stage on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Green Spot at 711 State Ave. In Alamosa, or online at www.societyhall.org.
A Legacy of Traditional Music
Domínguez and Vialpando are both members of an extended musical family that has been playing music in the San Luis Valley and northern New Mexico for generations. Both have carried forward these traditions while similarly incorporating their own original and more modern music. Society Hall is excited to feature their work.
Recognition for Artistic Contributions
In 2022, Domínguez was presented with the Premio Award by Herman Martinez of Los Hilos Culturales. The Hilos Culturales Premio Award recognizes traditional folk artists from the Upper Rio Grande Region, Southern Colorado, and Northern New Mexico, encompassing painters, sculptors, dancers, musicians, and wood carvers. Society Hall notes that Domínguez was one of the youngest artists to receive this honor, typically awarded to those with a lifetime of cultural preservation. He is the third generation of his family to receive the Traditional Folk Artist award.
Rose Vialpando’s Journey with Music
Vialpando grew up immersed in a musical family in the San Luis Valley, deeply influenced by her mother, uncles, and aunt. Family gatherings centered around the traditional music of Spanish Colonial and Northern New Mexico – Southern Colorado styles. After time away from her family and these traditions, Vialpando found her way back to music through her work as a counselor and social worker, helping women find their voices.
This inspired her to compose and record “Hallando Mi Voz (Finding My Voice),” a CD that blended traditional influences with a new style. She then formed the performing duo Los Cancioneros del Valle with her uncle Salomon Lopez, releasing a two-volume CD, “Dos Voces – Dos Guitarras,” featuring traditional rancheras, corridos, and valses.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Vialpando was honored in 2017 with the Hilos Culturales Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to preserving the Spanish colonial folk music of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.
