US Strikes on Iran Linked to Anticipated Israeli Action, Rubio Reveals

Recent U.S. Military action against Iran was partly motivated by intelligence indicating an impending Israeli strike, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Trump administration, Rubio explained, acted preemptively to protect American forces, anticipating Iranian retaliation against the U.S. Following a potential Israeli attack.

Rubio’s Explanation and Concerns Over Escalation

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Rubio stated, “We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action. We knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces, and we knew that if we didn’t preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties.” ABC News reported on the Secretary of State’s comments.

This disclosure has raised questions about the extent to which U.S. Policy is influenced by Israel, particularly given the limited public support for military intervention in Iran. Critics suggest the Trump administration was effectively “boxed in” by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long-standing desire for conflict with Iran.

Netanyahu’s Acknowledgment of U.S. Support

Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged the U.S. Role in the attacks, stating the operation was conducted “with the assistance of the United States, my friend, U.S. President Donald Trump, and the U.S. Military.” JTA reported that Netanyahu described the conflict as something he had been working towards for decades, stating it allows a “coalition of forces” to achieve his long-held objectives.

Debate Over U.S. Leverage and Motives

Some analysts, like former State Department lawyer Brian Finucane, suggest Rubio’s explanation may be a convenient cover for the Trump administration’s pre-existing inclination towards military action. Finucane pointed to past instances, such as the administration’s willingness to intervene in Venezuela, as evidence of this tendency. He also noted that the U.S. Possesses significant leverage over Israel through its substantial military aid – over $300 billion in total assistance since Israel’s founding – and could have used this leverage to influence Netanyahu’s actions. “The U.S. Likely could have prevented Israel from attacking Iran if it really wanted to,” Finucane, a senior advisor with the International Crisis Group, stated. “The U.S. Retains leverage over Israel.”

Casualties and Congressional Response

U.S.-Israeli strikes have resulted in at least 555 deaths and numerous injuries in Iran, including over 165 people killed in an attack on an elementary school. The New York Post reported that six U.S. Military personnel have been killed in action, including two previously unaccounted for.

Democratic leadership in Congress, including Representatives Gregory Meeks and Adam Smith, have sent a letter to Rubio and other top administration officials requesting a legal justification for the hostilities, a clear definition of U.S. Objectives, and criteria for determining mission success and potential cessation of operations.

State Department Silence

The State Department has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Rubio’s claims about Israeli influence on U.S. War policy or whether that influence will continue. JTA
