George Russell Claims Victory at Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes Secures 1-2 Finish
George Russell of Mercedes secured his sixth career victory at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, leading teammate Kimi Antonelli to a dominant 1-2 finish for the Silver Arrows. The race, held at Melbourne’s Albert Park, was marked by strategic battles and early incidents, ultimately favoring Mercedes’ one-stop strategy. Formula 1
Thrilling Start and Strategic Shifts
The race began with a fierce battle for the lead, as Charles Leclerc of Ferrari surged from fourth on the grid to take the lead from Russell. The two drivers exchanged positions multiple times in the opening laps, showcasing intense competition. A Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period, triggered by Isack Hadjar of Red Bull pulling off the track, prompted the Mercedes team to pit both Russell and Antonelli. However, Ferrari opted to stay out, setting the stage for contrasting strategies.
Another VSC, caused by the retirement of Valtteri Bottas of Cadillac, further complicated the strategic landscape. Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton too remained on track during this period. As the race progressed, Ferrari eventually made their pit stops, allowing Russell and Antonelli to regain the lead. The question then became whether Ferrari’s strategy of running to the end could challenge Mercedes, who might demand another stop.
Mercedes’ Strategy Pays Off
Despite the age of their tires, the Mercedes cars successfully maintained their lead, with Ferrari unable to close the gap sufficiently to force another stop. Russell crossed the finish line 2.9 seconds ahead of Antonelli, securing a well-deserved victory. Leclerc and Hamilton finished third and fourth, respectively, even as reigning World Champion Lando Norris of McLaren took fifth place. Formula 1
Early Race Drama and Audi’s Debut
The race wasn’t without its drama. Oscar Piastri of McLaren crashed on his way to the starting grid, preventing him from participating in his home Grand Prix. This continues the statistic that no Australian driver has ever achieved a podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix. Formula 1
Audi also celebrated a successful debut as a works team, with Gabriel Bortoleto securing two championship points by finishing ninth. However, his teammate Nico Hülkenberg faced technical issues that prevented him from starting the race.
Antonelli’s Practice Crash
Prior to the race, Kimi Antonelli experienced a significant crash during final practice at the Australian Grand Prix. He lost control at Turn 2, impacting the barrier at high speed. Fortunately, Antonelli was unharmed, and the Mercedes team worked diligently to repair the car, even with a red flag caused by Max Verstappen’s crash in Q1.
