FSB Reports Intercepted Drone Plot
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Monday that it intercepted a series of attempted large-scale Ukrainian drone attacks targeting military airfields deep within Russian territory. According to the state-run news agency TASS, the security service identified the Shagol air base in the Chelyabinsk region and the Ukrainka air base in the Amur region as the intended targets.
Balloons and Arrests in Bryansk
The FSB stated that Ukrainian intelligence services attempted to strike the facilities by utilizing a combination of balloons and drones. According to the official statement, the perpetrators allegedly moved containers holding drones into the western Bryansk region, intending to transport them toward the designated targets. The FSB confirmed that several individuals involved in the alleged plot have been arrested.

This report follows a similar claim issued by the FSB on Friday, which alleged that a separate operation targeting a military air base in the Rostov region had also been thwarted. The Rostov region shares a direct border with Ukraine and has frequently been a focal point for cross-border skirmishes and drone activity since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Tactical Shifts in Long-Range Strikes
The attempted strikes on the Shagol and Ukrainka bases mirror the tactical patterns of previous long-range operations. The Ukrainka air base, located in the Russian Far East, was previously targeted in 2025. According to assessments provided by the United States government, that earlier operation resulted in the destruction of approximately 10 Russian aircraft.

While Moscow frequently reports the interception of these drones, independent verification of the specific damage or the success of individual operations remains difficult due to strict censorship and security protocols surrounding military installations in Russia.
Expanding Reach and Electronic Evasion
The Chelyabinsk region is located in the Ural Mountains, thousands of kilometers from the conflict zone, while the Amur region sits in the Russian Far East.
Summary of Alleged Activity
- Targeted Bases: Russian authorities identified the Shagol (Chelyabinsk) and Ukrainka (Amur) air bases as the primary targets of the alleged Ukrainian drone plot.
- Methodology: The FSB claims that perpetrators used balloons to transport drone containers into the Bryansk region before attempting to move them toward the targets.
- Operational History: The Ukrainka base was previously hit in 2025, an event that U.S. officials estimated resulted in the loss of 10 Russian aircraft.
- Security Response: The FSB reports that it has made multiple arrests in connection with these recent thwarted attempts.
