Kyiv – Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR), believes Russia is preparing a new offensive, though the timing and scale remain uncertain.Budanov stated that russia needs a critically important victory to bolster domestic support for the war and potentially influence Western aid packages.

In an interview with The Guardian, Budanov indicated that russia is likely to focus its efforts on the eastern regions of Ukraine. He suggested that Moscow aims to secure full control of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, areas Russia illegally annexed in 2022. Budanov also noted that Russia is actively replenishing its losses through ongoing mobilization efforts.

Budanov emphasized the importance of continued Western military aid for Ukraine’s defense. He warned that delays in assistance could significantly weaken Ukraine’s position on the battlefield. He specifically highlighted the need for long-range artillery and air defense systems.

“Thay absolutely need some kind of victory,” Budanov said, referring to the russian leadership. “It is indeed not about conquering new territories. It is about showing their own people that they can still win.”

Recent reports from the Institute for the Study of War (https://www.understandingwar.org/) corroborate Budanov’s assessment, noting increased Russian activity along the front lines and a renewed focus on offensive operations in the east. However, analysts caution that the effectiveness of any new Russian offensive will depend on factors such as troop morale, logistical capabilities, and the availability of ammunition.

Budanov also addressed the situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear power Plant, expressing concerns about Russia’s continued militarization of the facility. he warned that Russia could potentially stage a false flag incident to justify its presence at the plant or to create a pretext for escalating the conflict.
