Russia Evacuates Staff from Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant Amidst Rising Tensions
Russia has been evacuating staff from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant following a reported strike near the facility, raising concerns about the safety of the plant as tensions escalate in the region. The situation is developing under a “worst-case scenario,” according to the head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom.
Reported Strike and International Response
On Tuesday evening, a projectile reportedly struck the grounds of the Bushehr nuclear power plant complex in Iran. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that, according to a report from Tehran, there were no injuries and no damage to the plant. Both Iran and Russia have alleged that a projectile impacted the plant’s grounds, increasing fears of a potential radiological incident amidst the ongoing conflict between Tehran and Israel, and the United States.
Rosatom’s Evacuation and Remaining Personnel
Rosatom has been actively evacuating its personnel from Bushehr. On Wednesday, a further 163 staff members were evacuated to the Iranian-Armenian border, bringing the total number evacuated to 313. Approximately 300 Russian personnel remain at the plant, with a small contingent – “a few dozen people” – expected to stay to oversee the equipment.
Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant: Background
Located in southwestern Iran, the Bushehr nuclear power plant was constructed with assistance from Rosatom and began operating in 2011. It is currently Iran’s only operational nuclear power facility. Rosatom was too in the process of building two recent reactors at the plant when the current conflict began.
Concerns and Calls for Restraint
Aleksei Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, warned on Wednesday that the situation at Bushehr is unfolding under a “worst-case scenario” following the strike. The IAEA issued a statement on Tuesday calling for “maximum restraint to avoid nuclear safety risks.”
Russia’s Outrage
The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed strong condemnation of the reported strike, calling it a “reckless, irresponsible manifestation of a disastrous course.”
