On April 21, 2026, a delegation from Latvia’s Saeima visited Canada to reinforce political, security, and economic ties between the two nations. The visit underscored the shared commitment of Latvia and Canada to democratic values and collective security within the Euro-Atlantic framework.

The delegation was led by Secretary of the Saeima Edvards Smiltēns and included Deputy Secretary Jānis Grasbergs, Chairperson of the Latvia-Canada Parliamentary Cooperation Group Irma Kalniņa, and Members of the Saeima Kaspars Briškens and Ramona Petraviča.

During meetings in Ottawa with Canadian parliamentary officials, including chairs of the House of Commons Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs and International Development, National Defence, and the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Latvian officials discussed current international challenges and reaffirmed mutual understanding of security threats.

Secretary Smiltēns emphasized Latvia’s appreciation for Canada’s leadership in the NATO Multinational Brigade stationed in Latvia and highlighted Canada’s role in promoting stability in the Baltic region. He noted that both countries view each other as close, like-minded allies within NATO and stressed the importance of maintaining strong bilateral dialogue.

The visit aimed to deepen cooperation across political, defense, and economic domains, reflecting the enduring partnership between Latvia and Canada based on shared democratic principles and joint efforts in international security.

This diplomatic engagement continues a pattern of high-level exchanges between the two nations, reinforcing their collaboration within NATO and broader global affairs.
