Saint-Pierre & Miquelon Native Pioneers Alzheimer’s Research in Montreal
Montréal is rapidly becoming a center for advanced research into neurodegenerative diseases, and Flavie Detcheverry, a doctoral student originally from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, is at the forefront of this effort. Her work focuses on understanding the complexities of brain aging and the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Detcheverry’s research investigates subtle changes in the brain that occur with age and how these changes relate to the development of Alzheimer’s. She analyzes brain structure and chemistry using biomedical imaging techniques and studies markers in the blood that may be linked to the disease’s progression. The goal is to improve understanding of the early transformations associated with Alzheimer’s and enhance tools for tracking its evolution.
From Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to Montréal: An Academic Journey
Flavie Detcheverry began her academic journey after completing her baccalauréat scientifique with a specialization in mathematics in 2018. She moved from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to Montréal to pursue a degree in cognitive neuroscience at the Université de Montréal. This foundational education sparked her passion for understanding the brain and the connection between brain activity and behavior. She graduated in 2021 with a specialization in clinical neuropsychology.
Following her undergraduate studies, Detcheverry transitioned into research, earning a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. This interdisciplinary field combines medical science and engineering principles, enabling the development of innovative tools for analysis and imaging.
Accelerated Doctoral Studies
In January 2023, Detcheverry entered an accelerated doctoral program in biomedical engineering, a fast-track option available to students demonstrating exceptional aptitude and supported by their research supervisors. This accelerated path allowed her to complete coursework in one year instead of two, reflecting the competitive nature of the field. Source
Contributing to Alzheimer’s Research
Detcheverry’s research is part of broader efforts to advance knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease, a growing global health concern affecting millions worldwide. Her work at the Université de Montréal contributes to the growing body of research aimed at understanding and combating this devastating illness. Source
