Sam Smith and Kim Petras Bring Castro Theatre Residency to a Close
Sam Smith concluded a 20-date residency at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco on Friday evening with a special performance featuring Kim Petras. The duo performed their Grammy-winning hit “Unholy” and later continued the celebration with an impromptu afterparty at the nearby LGBTQ+ bar, Lookout.
A Grammatical Collaboration and San Francisco Farewell
The performance marked the end of Smith’s month-long run at the newly renovated theatre. Petras, who recently performed a solo show at the Castro on Sunday, joined Smith on stage to sing “Unholy,” the song that earned them a Grammy for Best Duo/Group Performance in 2023. The significance of the win lies in the fact that Smith identifies as nonbinary and Petras is a trans woman, representing a milestone for representation in the music industry.
Impromptu Afterparty at Lookout
Following the concert, Smith and Petras visited Lookout, a popular LGBTQ+ bar near the Castro Theatre. Lookout’s owner, Chris Hastings, confirmed their attendance. Staff initially played a Sam Smith concert video on the TV, but paused it after a request from the performers, opting instead to screen the 2000 film “Almost Famous.” Smith was seen recording the scene on their phone while Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” played. The pair did not perform at Lookout, but enjoyed mingling with the crowd while the bar played “Unholy.”
Smith’s San Francisco Experience and Local Recognition
Throughout their residency, Smith embraced the San Francisco community, dining at local restaurants like Mission Chinese Food and San Tung and even meeting Mayor Daniel Lurie, who proclaimed March 13 as Sam Smith Day. During their final performance, Smith became emotional, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support received during their time in the city. The show too featured performances by local drag artists Peaches Christ, Nicki Jizz, and Mary Vice.
Petras’ Creative Shift
Petras’ appearance at the Castro Theatre followed her decision to request a release from her contract with Republic Records, citing a desire for greater creative control over her music. She has since begun independently releasing singles from a new project called “Pretour” while working on her third studio album, “Detour.”
