San Antonio Teens Invited to Participate in Annual Mental Health Survey

San Antonio teens are encouraged to share their experiences with mental health challenges in the city’s annual mental health survey, available through the SASpeakUp platform. The anonymous survey, open to young people ages 12 to 19, aims to inform local youth mental health programs and policies.

The survey was developed collaboratively by members of the San Antonio Youth Commission and teen ambassadors from Project Worth, a city-supported program focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Youth leaders will work with city staff to analyze responses and provide recommendations to local officials.

Ongoing Mental Health Concerns Among Teens

Recent survey data indicates that many San Antonio teens continue to experience significant mental health challenges, although some indicators have shown improvement since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2024 survey, with over 1,400 respondents, revealed that approximately a quarter of teens reported mental health struggles that sometimes interfere with daily activities – a decrease from roughly 37% in 2022.

Despite this improvement, concerns remain. More than six in ten teens reported that school negatively impacts their mental health, and around 14% reported having suicidal thoughts. However, reports of self-harm decreased from about 26% in 2022 to approximately 11% in the 2024 survey.

Disparities in Mental Health Experiences

The survey data also highlights disparities in mental health experiences among different groups of adolescents. LGBTQ+ and gender diverse teens reported higher rates of depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts compared to other respondents.

City’s Commitment to Youth Mental Health

City leaders emphasize that the survey results are crucial for guiding youth mental health initiatives and ensuring that young people have a voice in the development of support programs. The survey is seen as a key component of San Antonio’s efforts to understand and address growing concerns about youth mental health.

How to Participate

Teens can access the survey online through the SASpeakUp website until April 30th, 2026. The survey is anonymous.
