Sejong City Tennis Team Dismantling Sparks Controversy

the decision by Sejong City to dismantle its 15-year-old tennis team in july, in favor of creating a judo team, has ignited a significant controversy. The Sejong City Tennis Association responded with a press conference and a petition campaign opposing the dismantling.

The city has since offered two potential solutions – the operation of “mini teams” and investment in new facilities following the team’s disbandment – citing financial pressures. However, these measures are being criticized as inadequate alternatives. Concerns are being raised about the diminishing value of workplace athletics and their role in the community.

The proposed “mini team” approach would reduce the team size to just four men and four women. While projected to save between 300 to 400 million won, critics argue this will hinder athlete growth and diminish the team’s impact as a regional leader in workplace sports. The team’s ability to serve as role models for young athletes and represent local sports would also be weakened.

The option – dismantling the tennis team to fund the construction of a 1 billion won all-weather tennis court – is also facing scrutiny. While expanding sports infrastructure is important, critics contend that using funds reallocated from a specific team is not a lasting solution. They emphasize the need for long-term financial planning and stable resources for sports budgets,as well as addressing the employment and career concerns of the athletes.
