The Amica Center for Immigrant Rights (formerly CAIR Coalition) is the sole non-profit in the Washington, D.C. area dedicated exclusively to providing legal assistance to adult and child immigrants detained by the government in the Capital region and beyond. Our Detained Adult Program (DAP) supports hundreds of adults detained by ICE annually, offering data, support, and legal representation. We prioritize trauma-sensitive,person-centered services and respect the autonomy of those navigating the immigration system. The National Immigrant Legal Responders Alliance (NILRA) is a national initiative strengthening the immigration legal field’s capacity to respond to mass arrests, detentions, and deportations. NILRA unites legal providers – nonprofits, pro bono partners, and private attorneys – to expand access to high-quality legal support, particularly for individuals in immigration custody.
Facing unprecedented challenges to immigrant rights, NILRA focuses on increasing the number of attorneys equipped to represent detained individuals. A key strategy is pairing pro bono attorneys with experienced mentors and providing responsive technical assistance to ensure fair hearings and protection from unlawful deportations.
Position Summary
The Senior Attorney (Pro Bono mentorship) will focus on providing mentorship and technical assistance to volunteer attorneys through NILRA who are providing representation to detained immigrants pro bono.
General Duties and Responsibilities
* Pro Bono Mentorship: Manage a caseload of pro bono mentorships, guiding pro bono attorneys in habeas proceedings in federal district court and detained removal proceedings before immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and federal courts. This includes technical assistance on detention, bond, habeas corpus, asylum, withholding of removal, Convention Against Torture, cancellation of removal, and the immigration consequences of criminal convictions. Maintain records of pro bono cases for grant reporting and case management.
* Representation: This is primarily a non-representational role, though a minimal caseload aligned with professional progress goals may be possible. direct representation of detained individuals is possible for candidates seeking to continue this work.
* Other: Participate in stakeholder relationship activities, including training pro bono attorneys on common topics in habeas and removal defense.

Immigration Attorney – Amica Center
Amica Center is seeking a skilled and dedicated Immigration Attorney to join their team. This role requires a Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) degree, 3-5 years of experience in immigration law, and a commitment to providing high-quality legal services, particularly in the realm of pro bono representation. The ideal candidate will possess strong litigation skills and a passion for advocating for vulnerable populations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal representation to clients in immigration matters, including before federal courts.
- Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and prepare for hearings and trials.
- Coordinate and mentor pro bono attorneys, offering guidance and support in their cases.
- Manage a caseload effectively and efficiently.
- Contribute to the institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Qualifications
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) degree.
- Experience: 3-5 years of relevant experience in immigration law.
- Litigation: Habeas or federal court litigation experience is required.
- Bar Admission: Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing with a state bar.
- Language Skills: Written and oral Spanish proficiency is preferred.
- pro bono Experience: At least 1-2 years of experience coordinating pro bono legal services is preferred.
- Mentorship: Experience in mentoring pro bono attorneys is preferred.
