Seoul Launches “Slow & Easy Morning” Program, Opening Downtown Roads for Weekend Leisure
Seoul is set to transform a stretch of its downtown area into a car-free zone on select weekend mornings this March, launching a new initiative called “Slow & Easy Morning.” The program invites residents to enjoy a leisurely pace, walking, jogging, cycling, or simply strolling along Yeouidaero.
Pilot Program Details
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the pilot run of the program, which will temporarily open car-oriented roads to the public. The events will take place from 7 a.m. To 9 a.m. On March 14, 22, and 29, covering a 5km round-trip course from Yeouido Park to Mapo Bridge via Yeouidaero [Haps Korea].
Inclusive, Non-Competitive Fitness
“Slow & Easy Morning” distinguishes itself from traditional marathons by prioritizing inclusivity and relaxed participation. Participants are encouraged to choose their preferred activity – walking, running, cycling, using strollers, or even bringing pets. The focus is on accessible everyday fitness rather than speed or competition [Haps Korea].
Traffic Management and Registration
To minimize disruption to traffic flow, the city will implement partial lane closures, allowing traffic to continue in opposing directions. Advance registration is required for a limited number of participants on March 14, with on-site registration also available. The sessions on March 22 and 29 will be open to all without prior registration. Advance sign-up is available through the Seoul Sports Council website.
Fitness Assessments and Rewards
At the start and finish area within Yeouido Park’s Cultural Plaza, participants can access free fitness assessments at the “Seoul Fitness Center” booth. Completing the assessment earns participants 1,000 points through the city’s Sonmok Doctor health rewards program. Additional on-site activities include stretching zones and photo opportunities [Haps Korea].
Commitment to Sustainability
The city is committed to operating the event under a zero-waste concept, encouraging participants to bring their own reusable water bottles and refrain from using disposable products. Water stations will be provided at the starting point and turnaround point.
A Vision for Shared Public Spaces
Seoul officials developed the program after consulting with experts in transportation, sports, and safety, and analyzing traffic data. The city will closely monitor the pilot program to minimize inconvenience and promote healthier lifestyles. If successful, “Slow & Easy Morning” could represent a shift towards reimagining Seoul’s streets as shared public spaces for people, rather than solely for vehicles [Haps Korea].
Independence Movement Day Commemoration
March 1st is Independence Movement Day, a national holiday commemorating the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919 and Korea’s fight for liberation. A bell-ringing ceremony at Bosingak Pavilion will pay tribute to the patriotic spirit of the movement [Seoul Metropolitan Government].
Other Cultural Events in March
The Sejong Center for the Performing Arts will host “Masterpiece Collection Series I: Spring, Always” on March 12 and 13, featuring the Seoul Metropolitan Chorus [Seoul Metropolitan Government]. The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is also scheduled to perform a special concert in March [Seoul Metropolitan Government].
