A North Belfast woman has issued a warning after she was left fighting for her life due to sepsis after experiencing a number of common symptoms she did not believe were serious.
Earlier this year Lauren Carson thought that she was suffering from the symptoms of a urinary tract infection and had been put on a course of antibiotics in the hopes that it would clear, but instead of getting better she started to develop some flu-like symptoms and a sore lower back, wich she put down to stress and the impact of exercise.
A few weeks would go by, with the 31-year-old even going on a holiday, and although she felt unwell she continued to dismiss her symptoms.
“I just kept thinking it was a bug or I was run down,” she said. “I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but looking back I was getting progressively worse.”
However, on the last day of her holiday, Lauren collapsed and was rushed to hospital where doctors quickly diagnosed her with sepsis.
“I remember feeling really confused and disoriented, and then I just collapsed,” she explained. “I was so scared.I didn’t no what was happening.”
She spent a week in intensive care, where she was told that if she had waited any longer to seek medical attention, she may not have survived.
“The doctors told me I was very lucky to be alive,” Lauren said. “they said that sepsis is a life-threatening condition and that it’s critically important to get treatment as soon as possible.”
Now recovered, Lauren is sharing her story to raise awareness of sepsis and its symptoms, which can include a high fever, chills, confusion, muscle pain, and difficulty breathing.
“I want people to know that sepsis is a serious condition and that it can happen to anyone,” she said. “If you think you might have sepsis, please seek medical attention immediately. It could save your life.”

Man Nearly Dies From Sepsis After dismissing Symptoms as Minor
A man from Northern Ireland experienced a near-fatal brush with sepsis after initially believing his symptoms were not serious. he is now sharing his story to raise awareness of the potentially rapid and dangerous progression of this life-threatening condition.
Initial Symptoms and Rapid Deterioration
The individual, whose name has not been released, recounts feeling unwell while travelling to the hospital, but initially thought his condition was “a bit over the top.” However, upon arrival, he quickly developed septic shock – a severe complication of sepsis that causes dangerously low blood pressure and organ dysfunction. He remembers little after that, but was informed that immediate surgery to remove a kidney stone was crucial to his survival. Without the swift intervention,he likely would have died.
“I still can’t get over how close things were to being fatal and with the symptoms being so normal I didn’t think much of it,” he stated.
Understanding Sepsis: A Silent Killer
sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection spirals out of control,damaging its own tissues and organs. It can be triggered by a variety of infections – bacterial, viral, or fungal – including those from pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and, as in this case, kidney stones. What makes sepsis particularly dangerous is its ability to progress rapidly. Early symptoms can mimic common illnesses, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
Common early symptoms of sepsis include:
* Fever or chills
* rapid heart rate
* Rapid breathing
* Confusion or disorientation
* Extreme pain or discomfort
As sepsis progresses, symptoms can worsen and include:
* Low blood pressure
* Decreased urination
* Severe weakness
* Organ failure
Recovery and a Call for Awareness
Following the successful surgery, the man is recovering well, although he experienced a period of being unable to walk for several weeks. He hopes that by sharing his experience, he can definitely help others recognize the signs of sepsis and seek medical attention promptly.
“I never thought the symptoms of sepsis could be so mild and it can become very dangerous very quickly,” he emphasized.
key Takeaways
* Sepsis is a medical emergency. Early recognition and treatment are critical for survival.
* Don’t dismiss seemingly mild symptoms. If you suspect an infection and experience any of the symptoms listed above, seek immediate medical attention.
* Time is of the essence. Sepsis can progress rapidly, so don’t delay seeking help.
* Know your risk factors. Certain individuals are at higher risk of developing sepsis, including infants and young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and those with weakened immune systems. CDC – Who is at Risk for Sepsis?
This man’s story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being vigilant about potential signs of sepsis and seeking prompt medical care. Increased awareness and rapid intervention are vital in combating this often-silent killer.
