Seth Rollins Credits CM Punk and Colt Cabana for Paving the Way for a New Generation of Wrestlers
WWE Superstar Seth Rollins recently reflected on the influence of CM Punk and Colt Cabana on his career, acknowledging their pioneering roles in opening doors for independent wrestlers seeking opportunities in WWE. Rollins’ comments came during an appearance on the UnSportsmanLike podcast, where he was prompted to speak positively about Punk.
Punk and Cabana as Pioneers
Rollins stated that CM Punk, alongside Colt Cabana, were instrumental in creating a path for wrestlers with similar independent wrestling backgrounds to gain access to WWE. “He was a pioneer…What he did for guys like me who came from the same kind of independent background as he did,” Rollins explained. “Him and his ex-friend I suppose, Colt Cabana, were two guys who really…they helped pave the way for young guys like me to be able to find a path to WWE when it didn’t seem possible before.”
A Complex Relationship
Despite acknowledging their influence, Rollins also discussed the evolution of his relationship with Punk. He noted a growing divide between them over time, attributing it to differing perspectives on the wrestling industry. “At some point, it became too much for him and he changed and he left, and I grew and he sort of stagnated,” Rollins said. He further characterized Punk as becoming “bitter and self-centered,” prioritizing his own concerns over the broader advancement of the wrestling business.
Current Rivalry and WrestleMania
The acknowledgment of Punk and Cabana’s impact comes amidst a heated rivalry between Rollins and Punk within WWE. CM Punk is currently the reigning WWE World Heavyweight Champion and is scheduled to defend the title against Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 42. This will be the second consecutive year that Reigns and Punk have headlined WrestleMania, having previously competed in a Triple Threat match with Rollins at WrestleMania 41.
