Echavarria Wins Cognizant Classic as Lowry Suffers Late Collapse
Nico Echavarria secured his third PGA Tour victory at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, capitalizing on a dramatic late-round collapse by Shane Lowry. The Colombian finished with a 17-under-par 267, two strokes ahead of Lowry, Austin Smotherman, and Taylor Moore.
Lowry’s Heartbreak at PGA National
Shane Lowry appeared poised for his first PGA Tour win since teaming with Rory McIlroy at the 2024 Zurich Classic, holding a three-stroke lead through 15 holes. But, consecutive double bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes – both resulting from tee shots finding the water – derailed his chances. Lowry finished with a 69, joining Smotherman and Moore in a tie for second place at 269.
“I’m obviously extremely disappointed,” Lowry stated. “I had the tournament in my hands, and I threw it away. What more can I say? That’s twice this year now so far. I’m getting solid at it.” He added, “I played unbelievable all day, and one bad shot on 16 completely threw me for the last three holes. It’s never happened to me before.”
Echavarria’s Consistent Performance
Echavarria, who didn’t record a bogey all weekend, carded a 5-under 66 in the final round. A crucial birdie on the par-3 17th proved pivotal as Lowry faltered. This victory marks Echavarria’s first in the contiguous United States and earns him a second invitation to the Masters Tournament.
“It was a blessing today,” Echavarria said. “I didn’t have my best off the tee, but I was able to manage. I had some good breaks. To win out here, sometimes you have to have good breaks if you’re not Scottie Scheffler that hits it every time in the perfect place. So, I’m happy with how it went.”
Financial Reward and Future Outlook
Echavarria’s win comes with a $1.728 million prize, approximately $200,000 more than his previous largest payday from the 2024 Zozo Championship in Japan. Lowry will quickly turn his attention to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, followed by The Players Championship, seeking to rebound from this latest disappointment at PGA National, where he has finished in the top 11 for five consecutive years without a win.
