A ship with humanitarian aid from the United States arrived this Tuesday at the port of Santiago de Cuba, according to sources from the Catholic Church and the United States Embassy on the island.

The cargo of the commercial vessel includes seven containers carrying food and hygiene kitsreported the Archbishopric of Santiago de Cuba.

“Once they are extracted from the port, the supplies will have their final destination to the dioceses of Bayamo-Manzanillo, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba, where they will be distributed with the usual organization, care and respect for the beneficiaries. The Catholic church, Through its humanitarian arm Cáritas Cuba, with this task it reaffirms its commitment to accompany, serve and support, especially in the most difficult moments, those who need it most,” explains information from Cáritas Cuba.

For his part, the head of the US diplomatic mission on the island, Mike Hammer, recorded a video in the port of Santiago de Cuba, ensuring the delivery.

“I have been touring the region to see if assistance is arriving and to see if we can continue sending it to alleviate the suffering and to improve the conditions of the people a little,” explained the diplomat.

The shipment is part of the new aid for six million dollars approved by the Trump administration, when the living conditions for the majority of residents on the island have been worsened by increasingly prolonged blackouts and the imminent end of oil reserves.

“This aid will be delivered through the same channel as the first three million dollars, with pre-packaged products transported from Miami and distributed by representatives of local parishes. This method has proven to be very effective in ensuring that the failed Cuban regime cannot interfere with or divert aid intended for the island’s needy population,” the State Department had noted last week in a statement.

The new delivery, which brings the money allocated by the United States government to those affected by the hurricane to nine million, consists of non-perishable foods that can be preserved without the need for refrigeration, cans of tuna, beans, rice, pasta, hygiene products, and solar lamps, among other items necessary in an extreme environment.
