It’s tough to pick a favourite. Jannik Sinner could be the first player since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend his US open title, and there’s a lot to support that idea. But Carlos Alcaraz has just as many reasons to believe he can win his second US Open championship since 2022.
Let’s look at Sinner first. He’s the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings and is on a 27-match winning streak on hard courts.Only Federer (40) and Novak Djokovic (27) have had longer runs in history. He hasn’t dropped a set in New York, which shows how dominant he’s been during this tournament.
Only Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime have managed to take a set from him, and even then, they only broke his serve once each. This backs up the fact that Sinner’s been the best server on the ATP Tour for the last year.
Alcaraz will have to fight hard if he wants to stop Sinner from staying at No. 1,matching his five Grand Slam titles, and winning his third major title of 2025 after already taking Australia and Wimbledon.
Players Who’ve Won At Least Three Grand Slam Titles in a Year
Beyond his strong serve, Sinner has broken his opponents’ serve the most during the tournament – 35 times. that’s more than Djokovic (28) and Alcaraz (27) himself.
Actually, the 24-year-old Italian is also the best returner on the ATP Tour over the last twelve months.Of course, Alcaraz is right behind him (see statistical table), so both players are incredibly strong in this area.
