Skendata-Illbruck Wins 88th Rund Bornholm Regatta Despite Stormy Conditions

The 88th edition of the "Rund Bornholm" regatta, a hallmark event of the Warnemünder Woche, concluded after race organizers shortened the course from its traditional 250 nautical miles to approximately 120 nautical miles due to severe weather forecasts. Despite the abbreviated route, the competition remained intense as crews faced high winds and challenging sea conditions in the Baltic.

Course Adjustment for Participant Safety

On July 6, 2026, 34 crews departed Warnemünde under moderate conditions, with winds around 15 knots. However, race director Dirk Jahnke and his team monitored a significant depression over Finland, which threatened to bring wind gusts of up to 10 Beaufort by the night of the event. To ensure the safety of the fleet, organizers decided before the start to move the turning point to the north of Rügen, effectively halving the distance.

"With 30-knot winds, it was a risky undertaking," Jahnke noted regarding the decision. The shortened route required sailors to navigate steep, short waves and heavy rain during the return leg.

Performance of the "Skendata-Illbruck"

The "Skendata-Illbruck," an experienced ocean racing yacht from the Regatta-Verein Greifswald, crossed the finish line shortly after 2:00 a.m., earning the title of "First Ship Home." Skipper Oliver Schmidt-Rybandt noted that while the team prioritized safety by using a reduced sail plan to avoid structural damage, the boat still reached speeds of up to 18.5 knots.

Schmidt-Rybandt acknowledged the physical toll of the race, stating that the crew was relieved by the decision to shorten the course given the fatigue of night sailing in such conditions. Upon arrival, the crew received a traditional gesture from the race committee: a crate of beer delivered by dinghy, a welcome sight during the difficult night.

Competitive Results and Handicap Systems

Because the Rund Bornholm features a diverse range of vessels—from high-tech racers to family-oriented cruisers—organizers use handicap systems to determine the winners. These systems, including Yardstick and ORC (Operational Rating Congress), mathematically adjust finishing times based on the vessel’s specifications and performance potential to ensure fair competition.

Impact of Weather on the Fleet

The intensity of the weather forced six crews to abandon the race entirely, with those teams returning to port under power. By the afternoon of July 7, the remaining vessels were safely moored in Warnemünde. The event highlighted the technical demands of Baltic long-distance racing, where teams must balance performance with the capability to manage extreme weather variables, including night-time navigation and heavy sea states.
