Luxe Living: How Smart Home Tech is Transforming Furnishings

It’s safe to say, smart home technology is going from strength to strength – and with this, fashionable furnishings and decor to inspire you… and want to luxe up your life.

“As people spend increasingly more time in their living rooms, expectations of how our furnishings actually function, is slowly changing,” highlights Gisela Lancaster, head of buying, Sofology.

For many people, she says the central role of furniture has shifted from purely stylish, cozy seating, to an investment of multifunctional sofas that offer style. “As well as delivering on personalised comfort and convenient tech.”

Perhaps it’s due to an increase in people working from home, or rise in popularity of listening and media rooms, but this year alone Lancaster says they’ve seen a 44% uplift in sales of sofas with additional tech features such as heated seats, fridges, smart consoles and speakers.

“Of course this isn’t to everyone’s taste, but growth within the smart sofa category has been consistent as 2023,” says Lancaster.

Back to School, Back to Home: Design Trends for a Smooth Transition

As summer fades and routines re-establish themselves, creating a supportive and functional home environment becomes paramount. This year’s design trends focus on integrating technology seamlessly with comfort and style, helping families navigate the back-to-school transition with ease.

The Rise of the Multi-Functional Living Space

The modern home is increasingly expected to do more. According to industry experts, the focus is shifting towards spaces that can adapt to various needs throughout the day. This includes dedicated zones for work, learning, relaxation, and entertainment, all within a cohesive design. A key element is maximizing space and minimizing clutter, notably with the proliferation of devices.Thoughtful storage solutions and integrated technology are central to achieving this balance. The ideal space offers a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, with a clear delineation between areas for focused activity and unwinding.Strategic furniture placement and a well-considered color palette contribute to a sense of calm and order.

Circadian Lighting: Aligning with Natural Rhythms

Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville, highlights the importance of supporting natural rhythms, especially after the disruption of summer. “Disrupted sleep patterns, shifting schedules, and increased screen time all take their toll – especially on our circadian rhythms.”

The emerging trend of “circadian lighting” addresses this by mimicking the natural progression of sunlight throughout the day. This is achieved through technology like dimmer switches, color-changing bulbs, and automated schedules.

“Helping the whole household transition smoothly back into routine,” explains Miller. The beauty of this technology is its adaptability; it integrates into existing fixtures, meaning aesthetics don’t have to be sacrificed for functionality.

Miller suggests utilizing radiant, energizing light in the mornings to kickstart the day and transitioning to softer, warmer tones in the evening to promote relaxation and support melatonin production – crucial for restful sleep.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is further enhancing circadian lighting systems. These intelligent setups learn household habits and automatically adjust brightness and color temperature to optimize concentration, alertness, and rest. For example, study areas can benefit from cool, daylight-toned lighting during homework time, automatically shifting to warmer hues as evening approaches. This automation simplifies maintaining a consistent rhythm during busy school weeks.

Media Wall Fireplaces: Tech Integration & Cozy Ambiance

Rachal Hutcheson, national retail manager at Sharps, emphasizes the importance of organization as families return to busier schedules. She notes the challenge of managing the abundance of laptops, devices, and gaming consoles that often create a tangle of wires.

For those lacking dedicated home offices or cinema rooms, a media wall offers a stylish and functional solution. It allows for the seamless integration of advanced technology within a bespoke design that appeals to both modern and customary tastes.

“Shaker-style furniture, normally associated with cottagecore chic, can be built to seamlessly house the latest smart TV; supported by stylish shelving and textured feature back panels, all brought to life by subtle shelf lighting,” suggests Hutcheson.

As autumn approaches, integrated fireplaces are becoming increasingly popular focal points. Modern fireplaces offer realistic 3D and 5D flame effects, customizable fuel beds, and precise temperature control, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
