People who have smoked for years or still smoke should have a low intensity computed tomography test. This medical study allows early detection of lung tumors or nodules and it could make the difference between life and death.
Argentine cardiologist Jorge Tartaglione explained that if someone smoked for 20 years and stopped 15 years ago, they can still benefit from this exam. According to him, this type of imaging helps identify problems before clinical symptoms appear.
During a presentation at LN+ of The Nation from argentina, the doctor stressed the need to stop smoking in time and to carry out timely checks. He said that his own father died from lung cancer caused by smoking, which reinforced his conviction about prevention.
“Those who smoked for twenty years and stopped, for example, fifteen years ago, have the possibility of undergoing a study that not only allows for the early detection of tumors and nodules, but can also save their lives: low intensity computed tomography” explained Tartaglione.
Risks for non-smokers also exist
Tartaglione pointed out that the damage is not exclusive to those who smoke. There are three types of exposure to tobacco smoke:
* Direct for who lights the cigarette.
* Second hand which affects the smoker’s cohabitants.
* Third hand when someone is exposed to environments where there was smoke, such as hotel rooms. Tobacco residue can remain on surfaces for up to nine months.
Smoking leaves consequences even years later. This study allows early detection and could save lives. (Canva/Canva)
