The longer users remain on the platform, the greater the revenue generated. This business model prioritizes attention over user well-being, and young people are particularly vulnerable to its effects.

A ban simply shifts the responsibility from multi-billion dollar corporations to families, and schools. It’s akin to prohibiting young people from a dangerous street without addressing the traffic issues that make it hazardous. As highlighted in investigations by organizations like Global Witness [1], algorithms can also push specific political content, raising concerns about manipulation and the spread of misinformation, particularly during election cycles.

The Rise of Disinformation and Platform Accountability

The struggle to curb disinformation on platforms like TikTok has been a long-standing issue. Mozilla Foundation research in 2021 [4] revealed ineffective labeling of content related to the German Federal Election and a late implementation of fact-checking partnerships. The impersonation of political institutions and figures on these platforms demonstrates a failure to enforce community guidelines.

Recent investigations have also shown a bias in content recommendation systems. Global Witness found that TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) recommended pro-AfD (Alternative for Germany) content to non-partisan users ahead of the German elections [3], raising concerns about algorithmic influence on political discourse.

What Needs to Be Done

Protecting children requires addressing the root causes of the problem – the platforms themselves. Effective solutions include:

  • Prohibiting addictive mechanisms for minors.
  • Ensuring algorithmic transparency.
  • Establishing real liability for rule violations.
  • Implementing sensitive sanctions for platforms that fail to comply.

Young people will inevitably engage with digital spaces. The goal should be to create regulated environments that prioritize their safety and well-being, rather than leaving them vulnerable in unregulated areas. A better internet, not less access, is the key.
