Sofia Coppola Shelves Kirsten Dunst Period Film, Cites “Dark Times”

Fans anticipating another collaboration between director Sofia Coppola and actress Kirsten Dunst will have to wait, as a planned period film starring Dunst has been put on hold indefinitely. Coppola explained the decision stemmed from the film’s somber tone, feeling it was ill-suited for the current cultural climate.

Project Details and Cancellation

Coppola revealed to Elle that the project, which had been in development with a planned shoot for 2026, was scrapped due to the fact that “it felt too sad.” She elaborated, stating, “It’s confusing in these dark times. I want to offer some hope and beauty in the world, but then you also don’t want to do something shallow, because it feels like a time for deep things.”

Dunst had previously described the film as a period piece centered on a real, though not widely known, historical figure. She shared details during press appearances for Poor Things, noting the project aimed to shoot in the U.S. Yahoo Entertainment reports.

A Longstanding Collaboration

Coppola and Dunst have a notable history of working together, beginning with The Virgin Suicides (1999). They later collaborated on Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Beguiled (2017). Their partnership is considered one of the more enduring actor-director relationships in contemporary American cinema. W Magazine highlighted their frequent collaborations in a recent profile.

Other Projects on Hold

The shelved Dunst project isn’t the only one Coppola has paused. A planned Apple TV+ series based on Edith Wharton’s The Custom of the Country was also put on hold after Sydney Sweeney became attached to a feature adaptation of the same novel.

Dunst’s Upcoming Role

Despite this setback, Dunst remains busy. She is set to appear in the sequel to The Minecraft Movie, a project she expressed interest in joining, hoping for a financially successful venture. As reported by Yahoo Entertainment, Dunst previously joked about wanting to be in a movie “where I don’t lose money.”

Coppola’s Recent Operate

Coppola’s recent work includes the 2023 biographical film Priscilla, focusing on Priscilla Presley, and the documentary Marc by Sofia, centered on fashion designer Marc Jacobs.
