Flu Season Update: South Carolina Reports 45 Deaths, Widespread Activity

CHARLESTON, S.C.- South Carolina is currently experiencing a high level of influenza activity, with 45 deaths reported during the 2025-2026 influenza season, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH). Data indicates a meaningful impact across the state, particularly in the upstate, Midlands, and Pee Dee regions.

Recent Flu Statistics

between January 1st and January 10th, 19 additional deaths were attributed to the flu virus. The state remains categorized as “very high” on the national influenza-like illness (ILI) map maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While widespread activity has been reported statewide this week, recent data suggests a potential downward trend in key indicators. The SCDPH reports a decrease in lab-confirmed influenza tests, influenza-like illness cases, and hospitalizations.

Regional Breakdown of Fatalities

  • Upstate: 20 deaths
  • Midlands: 8 deaths
  • Pee Dee: 16 deaths
  • Lowcountry: 1 death

Testing and Hospitalization Data

A total of 17,779 lab-confirmed influenza cases have been reported in South Carolina this season, with 2,145 cases identified during the most recent reporting week. As of this week, 53 hospitals across the state have reported 501 hospitalizations related to influenza.

County-Level Concerns

Several counties,including Berkeley and Charleston,are currently reporting ILI rates above the state’s normal baseline of 3.7%.Public health officials continue to monitor these areas closely.

The SCDPH urges residents to take preventative measures to protect themselves and others from the flu, including vaccination, frequent handwashing, and staying home when sick.
