South Korea Eases Visa Restrictions to Boost Tourism
South Korea has implemented a series of visa relaxations for travelers from Indonesia, China, and Southeast Asian nations, aiming to significantly increase international tourism. The move, announced during the 11th National Tourism Strategy Meeting led by President Lee Jae-Myung, is part of a broader effort to position tourism as a core national strategic industry.
Visa Policy Changes
The key changes to South Korea’s visa policy include:
- Indonesia: Tourist groups of three or more Indonesian visitors will now be granted visa-free entry.
- China & Southeast Asia: Travelers from these regions who have previously visited South Korea will be eligible for five-year entry visas.
- Extended Visas: Multiple-entry visas for residents of 14 cities in China and three cities in Vietnam will be extended from five to ten years.
- EU Travelers: Automated immigration clearance will be expanded to include tourists from European Union countries.
Improving Regional Connectivity
South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is taking steps to enhance connectivity to regional airports through:
- Creating special air traffic rights.
- Offering fee reductions to attract novel international routes.
- Adding domestic connecting flights between Incheon and regional airports.
- Expanding late-night airport bus services to Chungcheong and Gangwon provinces.
high-speed KTX train tickets will be available for booking further in advance than the current one-month window.
Strengthening Tourism Infrastructure
The Ministry of Culture will oversee the accommodation industry to address lodging shortages outside of Seoul and will enforce stricter regulations against tourism operators engaging in unreasonable pricing practices. A new self-reporting system will require accommodation providers to pre-register seasonal rates to improve pricing transparency.
Leveraging K-Pop’s Global Influence
President Lee Jae-Myung expressed his hope that the global popularity of K-pop culture will translate into increased tourism, driving economic growth as reported by Reuters. He emphasized the importance of tourism as a key national strategic industry.
Recent International Cooperation
President Lee Jae-Myung recently met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on November 1, 2025, to discuss continued military and security cooperation between the two nations according to The Chosun Ilbo. This meeting underscores South Korea’s commitment to strengthening ties with key regional partners.
As of November 2025, President Lee Jae-Myung has undertaken 7 international trips to 9 countries since assuming office on June 4, 2025 as detailed on Wikipedia, including visits to Canada, Japan, the United States, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates.
