From Corporate Space too Startup Founder: Bianca Cefalo’s Space DOTs

Bianca Cefalo grew frustrated with the corporate space world, ultimately leading her to found her own space company and launch objects into orbit.

Cefalo is the founder of Space DOTs, launched in 2022 to detect space threats. she and her team developed SKY-I, a software platform for space tech manufacturers and operators.SKY-I helps them detect, interpret, and attribute both natural and human-caused threats in orbit.

Cefalo has decades of experience in the industry, contributing to projects that placed objects on the moon and launched satellites. She worked as a thermofluid dynamic analyst on the NASA Insight Mission to Mars and served as a product manager at Airbus Defense and Space, focusing on telecommunication satellites.

Though, she found industry politics and corporate bureaucracy hindered progress. “I got bored of the game,” she told TechCrunch.

She explained that her ideas consistently faced resistance at her previous employer.”The response was always, ‘if it hasn’t flown already, we’re not using it on our satellite,'” she saeid. “We were asked to innovate, but they wouldn’t adopt anything unproven… I was hired to be an ‘innovator’ inside a large corporation, but I was essentially told ‘not too much.'”

So, she changed the rules.

Cefalo estimates that nearly 15% of spacecraft experience anomalies or failures because manufacturers and operators misunderstand the realities of space.
