Spain Train Collision: Death Toll Rises, Examination Underway
Córdoba, Spain – A high-speed train collision in southern Spain on Sunday evening has resulted in at least 42 fatalities and numerous injuries, marking the deadliest rail disaster in Europe in eight decades. The incident occurred at 7:45 p.m. local time near Adamuz, a town within the province of Córdoba.
According to spain’s interior ministry, the crash involved an iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid and a Renfe service heading from madrid to Huelva. Preliminary reports indicate that the rear section of the Iryo train derailed, veering onto an adjacent track and colliding with the oncoming Renfe train. Renfe is the state-owned rail operator in Spain, while Iryo is a private high-speed rail company.
Adif, the state rail infrastructure manager, confirmed the Iryo train’s derailment preceded the collision. The impact forced the Renfe train off the tracks and down a railway embankment.Emergency services are continuing to work at the scene,providing medical assistance to the injured and recovering victims.
