Montecatone’s Spinal Unit: A National Leader in Spinal Cord injury Rehabilitation
Life can change in an instant, but renewed hope begins at the Spinal Unit of the Montecatone Institute. As the largest facility of its kind in Italy, Montecatone’s Spinal Unit welcomes approximately 600 individuals each year – over half traveling from outside the Emilia-Romagna region – navigating the challenges of spinal cord injury.
With 120 dedicated beds, the unit serves as a national point of reference for comprehensive spinal cord injury management, operating in close collaboration with the Bologna healthcare and university network. The Spinal Unit isn’t simply focused on treatment; it’s dedicated to building a future for its patients.
The unit is adapting to evolving patient demographics. While traumatic injuries linked to accidents are decreasing, there’s a growing number of cases resulting from falls in the elderly and non-traumatic causes like oncological or degenerative conditions. These cases often necessitate more complex and tailored rehabilitation programs.
“Rehabilitation begins in the early acute phase, where timing is crucial,” explains Laura Simoncini, Director of the Spinal Unit. “Our goal is to maximize functional outcomes and quality of life through an interdisciplinary approach.” This holistic method integrates the expertise of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech therapists, and social workers, all focused on restoring autonomy.
Recent advancements at the unit include the integration of cutting-edge technologies for clinical assessment and robotic rehabilitation alongside traditional therapies. Increased attention is also given to chronic conditions and highly complex interventions.
“The Spinal Unit is central to Montecatone’s mission,” states Mario Tubertini, the unusual commissioner. “It’s a place where clinical expertise, innovation, and comprehensive patient care converge.”
