SA Rugby and URC Franchises Clash over Springbok Availability

SA rugby and the South African United Rugby Championship (URC) franchises are currently negotiating the release of Springboks players for the upcoming match against Wales.

The fixture, scheduled for November 29 at the Principality Stadium, falls outside the official World Rugby Test window. This creates a conflict, as the Bulls, Lions, Sharks, and Stormers are all scheduled to return to URC action on the same weekend.

As a result, the URC franchises are requesting financial compensation from SA Rugby. They argue they will be deprived of key players who will be representing the springboks on international duty.

URC Teams’ Compensation Demands

According to Rapport, the franchises are seeking R500,000 (approximately £22,000) per player selected for the Springboks. SA Rugby’s counter-offer is reportedly significantly lower.

These negotiations aren’t new. Similar situations have arisen previously with England and France. However, the south African franchises are reportedly frustrated by the Springboks’ packed schedule, which includes 15 matches this year.

The unavailability of players during springbok commitments, combined with the mandatory eight-week rest period afforded to them afterward, is causing concern for the franchises. They believe this impacts their ability to compete effectively in the URC.
