A Life in Film
Born Olivia Osuna on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hussey’s journey to Hollywood began with her family’s move to London when she was 7. She honed her acting skills at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, making her stage debut at 13 under the name Olivia Hussey. Her impressive performance in a 1966 West End production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie opposite Vanessa Redgrave caught the attention of director Franco Zeffirelli, leading to her casting as Juliet.
At just 15 years old, Hussey captivated audiences worldwide alongside 16-year-old Leonard Whiting as Romeo. The film, a beautiful and controversial adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including a Best Picture nod, and cemented Hussey’s status as a rising star. Later in her career, Hussey reconnected with Whiting for a modern take on Romeo and Juliet titled Social Suicide (2015). This marked her final on-screen appearance.
Hussey also lent her voice to video games based on popular franchises, including Star Wars, Batman, and Superman.
Leaving a Legacy
In addition to her film and television work, Hussey also penned a memoir, The Girl on the Balcony: Olivia Hussey Finds Life After Romeo and Juliet (2018).
In a bid for justice, Hussey and Whiting initiated a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures in 2023, alleging child abuse during the filming of Romeo and Juliet. The suit, ultimately dismissed, claimed that director Zeffirelli pressured them into performing a nude bedroom scene, despite initial assurances that they could wear body suits.
