Steve Perry Shuts Down Journey Reunion Hopes Ahead of Farewell Tour
Despite decades of stating he had no intention of rejoining Journey, vocalist Steve Perry has definitively dismissed speculation that he would do so before the February 28th launch of the band’s “Final Frontier” farewell tour.
Perry’s arrival in 1977 helped propel Journey into the mainstream, establishing them as a prominent force on FM radio. Though, he departed for good in 1998 and has not performed with the band since.
“I’ve been hearing these recent rumors, and I wanted to speak to you all directly,” the 77-year-old rock legend wrote on Instagram. “While I’m always grateful for the love people still have for Journey, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest. I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too. But I’m continuing to explore latest creative work and really enjoy working on new music that reflects where I am today.”
“Thank you for your continued support throughout the years,” Perry added, who reunited with Journey for their 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction but has maintained a somewhat distant relationship with the band’s sole remaining original member, guitarist Neal Schon.
Recent Reunion Talk
The recent speculation was sparked by Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who told Ultimate Classic Rock that Neal Schon had contacted Perry regarding a potential guest appearance on the tour. Cain stated that Schon had asked Perry, and Perry hadn’t dismissed the idea outright, fueling fan excitement.
Journey’s current lineup, besides Schon, includes keyboardist Jonathan Cain, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen. Arnel Pineda has been the band’s lead singer since 2007.
Perry’s Recent Musical Activity
Outside of his three impromptu performances with the indie rock band Eels in 2014 – his first in nearly 18 years – Perry was largely absent from music for much of the 2000s. He returned in 2018 with the solo album Traces, followed by two holiday albums. He also revisited Journey’s ballad “Open Arms” with Dolly Parton on her 2023 album Rockstar and collaborated with Willie Nelson on a 2025 Farm Aid benefit single of Journey’s “Faithfully.”
Vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, who briefly served as Journey’s lead singer before Pineda, commented on Perry’s Instagram post, stating, “We all know where you stand, Steve. The rumors and hopes will always surface but we know where your heart is and accept it. Carry on master.”
