Serval on the Loose in Gelderland: Police Issue Safety Warning

Residents of Haaften, a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland, have been warned by police to be cautious due to a loose serval, a medium-sized African wild cat, roaming the area. The West Betuwe police issued the warning via social media, advising people to be aware of their safety.

Details of the Incident

The serval, described as having a collar, was first reported on Saturday, but as of yesterday, no further sightings had been reported according to a local agent from De Gelderlander. Authorities are also attempting to locate the animal’s owner. The police suggest the serval may be in the more rural areas surrounding Haaften. RTL Nieuws reported on the situation earlier today.

What is a Serval?

Servals (Leptailurus serval) are wild cats native to Africa, often referred to as “tiger cats” due to their distinctive markings. They are carnivores with sharp teeth and claws, and can pose a danger to humans and domestic animals. RTL Nieuws notes that servals are now on a list of prohibited animals in the Netherlands, established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature on July 1, 2024. While those who owned a serval before this date are permitted to keep it, breeding is no longer allowed.

Location of Haaften

Haaften is located in the province of Gelderland, in the Netherlands, on the northern bank of the Waal river, opposite Zaltbommel. It is now part of the municipality of West Betuwe, approximately 25 km south of Utrecht. Wikipedia provides detailed geographical information about the village.

Servals as Pets

Despite their wild nature, servals have sometimes been kept as exotic pets. Still, organizations like Stichting AAP warn against this practice, stating that servals are not suitable as domestic animals and often end up in animal sanctuaries after biting their owners. Hart van Nederland highlights this concern.

What to Do if You Spot the Serval

If you see the serval, the police advise you to contact the animal ambulance or the police directly. Do not approach the animal and maintain a safe distance.
